Photographs of London: Week 3: Potential Portfolio Photos

I apologize for the delay; here are my potential Week 3 Portfolio Photos!

This photo was taken of from the top of the Camera Obscura/World of Illusions building and contains Edinburgh's Ferris Wheel hiding behind one of the monuments. It was taken on my independent trip to Edinburgh on Friday, July 19th.

The photo on the left is of the waterfall located by the Japanese Garden Island in Regent's Park. This was an independent trip on Saturday, July 20th.

The photo on the right is of willow trees & their reflection on the Boating Lake in Regents Park. I am not really sure what inspired me to do this, but it shall be a mystery.

The photo on the left is of a submerged flower in Triton's Fountain at Regent's Park. This was taken on Saturday, July 20th.

This flower photo is also located in Regent's Park and I sadly cannot remember where the bridge in the background leads.

The photo on the left is my favorite red panda photo taken at Edinburgh Zoo on Saturday, July 20th. Her name is Ginger and she was only active around feeding time. You can see the bamboo leaves in the pictures. Since Ginger was such a cute model, please peruse the next two red panda photos as well.

Side note: This last photo is one of my favorite from my Edinburgh trip. I took it sitting on my hotel room bed in the morning. If anyone is willing to work with me to edit it, I would be extremely grateful. Solo work has not help me.

  1. Sarah,

A trend that I have noticed in your work is how you layer. What I mean is how you position the camera in order to have the objects in your photos overlap. This helps to give your images a lot of depth! I do think you are quite successful in this! However, when it comes to layering, focus is especially important. A well composed image can be completely thrown off if the focus is on the wrong thing. I am seeing this happen in the last photo (view from your hotel room). The focus is on the window pane instead of the ornate building. If this focus point was intentional, I would have encouraged you to try a shorter depth of field by making the aperture wider. How were you wanting to further edit this image? I can probably assist!

  2. Hey Sarah, your photos are really great this week! They're all very bright and colorful. I like the blue one and the green one best, I think they're both very unique and visually interesting. I would say that the ferris wheel photo definitely isn't your best. You got the focus o the wall very well, but they eye is drawn to the more colorful ferris wheel, which is blurred, so I probably wouldn't use that one. But, overall I liked them a lot, an the red pandas are very cute!

  3. Sarah,

Your first image is nicely layered and sort of gives a Walker Evans vibe with the layers. Of course, I love the images of the Red Pandas. Not only are they adorable, they are all composed well with the foliage around the subject suggesting movement or stillness. Good work. I absolutely love the colors in the image with the flower in the water. Usually, I dislike extreme saturation, but in the image, I feel like it wouldn't work without it. The colors make the image look as if it were taken on slide film. You have some strong additions to your portfolio this week.

  4. Sarah,
Love the photos for this week! Personally this is my favorite round from you! I’m particularly drawn to the reflected willow and the submerged flower. They have elements of abstraction that I find really intriguing and beautiful. The first image is strong as well! I like the contrast of the curve of the wheel with all the straight lines of the buildings, as well as the pop of red amidst all the brown!
